that magic box (same as the ebay one) tracker http://www.magicbox.co.za/shop/product.asp?id=1085 sms's the gps coordinates back to you when you give it a missed call. nice and simple but a bit klutzy. good battery life and you can setup a geo-fence so it will sms as soon as it goes out that fence.

pity it cant log to a website (it relies on you doing gymnastics on your ADSL router to connect to it), maybe i should design a website so that it can continually log data over gprs? then we an all watch each other's quads even though we cant go fly!

The tracker sends texts to a specfied cell number. How are you going to integrate that into a site?

the website will poll the tracker for its info over GPRS instead of SMS which is costly.

Can the tracker send info to a specified server? Explain, im not quite sure how this works. :)

There has to be a connection from pc to tracker, tcp, udp or some or other com protocol.

Where exactly does the tracker send its info to, or does the pc look for the ip address of the tracker? This cant be as the ip address would change every time u turned the thing on.

EDIT:
So the listing on ebay says it doesnt need a server. So its a direct connection via the pc/net to the device. How does the pc find the device? Obviously via an IP address. :hmmm:

tracker -> webserver -> database -> webpage -> your iphone/blackberry

the tracker connects diretly to their software using the ip address of your ADSL modem. thats a pain because how do you run the software when you are out and about? so mimick the software and give the tracker the ip address of a web server thats continually listening.

yup, you still need a webserver for the tracker to connect to :)

I suppose it all depends whether we can hack the tracker to connect to a server of our choice.

from reading the GPRS installation manual of the hacker from the web page, it seems as if all you have to do is give the tracker an ip address to log its data to.
In the manual they tell you how to setup your ADSL router for NAT and direct that IP address through to your laptop running their software which is running ready to receive GPS data. Instead of your ADSL router, laptop and their software, we put a web server and our software to log the data then we can display it in a browser.
