Are guys designing their beer lift copters in Sketchup? Won't Google steal the designs?...or am I just being paranoid?

I shall create a method of making them come to me and at my command one shall become many. That's what I think of copying by Google. Although as a point of order Sketchup was sold to Trimble.

But that's my inner nerd (not so inner) coming out.

Just using Sketchup to make sure I have the spacing for the props right before I drill any holes, measure twice cut once style.

hmmm. Sketch-up is a cool package but I just get this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that there's something they're not telling us. Maybe I'm just WAY too paranoid. A computer scientist friend of mine once said: "Just assume that if you have a computer and an internet connection, I can see EVERYTHING you do, have done, and by your habits can predict within a calculable probability where you will go next (on the internet)."

He was a scary clever dude and just like the sinister sounds of the JAWS music play in my head when I'm in the sea, I can never quite shake the thought that maybe he was right.

So I guess with that in mind...NO software is "safe" really.

I've used Sketchup a bit but it can be buggy at times.

Think I'll see if I can find an old copy of Autocad in my office. You can actually get another free 3D drawing tool called Wings 3D - although I've never used it.
Does Sketchup allow synthesized stressing/non-destructive testing of moving parts created? Many years ago I knew my way around "Solidworks"...but it's been so long I don't even know if it's still around or been bought out my a mega-corporation. Not to mention the fact that I probably wouldn't know where to start? :book:

Will be good to see some of the designs that come out for this beer lift compo. Is there a separate category for drones built from scratch?

Don't know if anyone is interested but Solidworks is STILL very much ALIVE and KICKING. :woot:

Man oh man! It was THE software package back in my engineering days and it looks like nothing has changed - it's still one of those DEFACTO STANDARDS in solid modelling and 3D CAD :book:

If anybody has contacts who can organise a group discount for SA Drones members, please post some info. But if it cost upwarsd of R50k in the 90's (well that's what the University and Technikon paid for licenses) it'll cost a bundle now.

so Sketchup and Wings are looking like the best options so far.

Hopefully ill get some workshop time in this weekend and make a vid next week:

Plan of action:

1. get SIM time in, has been a while since i flown (still learning to fly)
2. replace faulty speed controller & put on bigger props
3. find a way of strapping 39 liters of beer to my quad (troll face)
4. shoot lift as per competition rules
Make it, break it, fix it!
