Proper Drone controller - an idea

Postby TAMoelich » Sun Oct 07, 2012 8:29 am

Dear friends, while browsing the net I got this idea and are going to give it a go.

How about a proper drone control station (when using FPV) sitting on the back of your bakkie flying your drone.
The idea is to encode a proper ergonomic joy-stick with throttle control to PPM and feed this to my radio's buddy (D.S.C.) input
This way I can control my drone from any controls I choose (provided that I encoded the HW to PPM)
Unfortunately I use a JR PROPO 9XII X-mitter so I only have access to the 1st four channels in the training menu...
The pilots using Turnigy 9X has got access to all the channels (sometimes used for FPV head tracking

I'll use a joy-stick og my liking use a PIC micro (maybe 16F88) and write some code to read the joystick
send the PPM to the trainer port and wha-la!!

Will chat soon

That' should work.

I had an idea a while back just to hack open a 9X and a wingman joystick.
Connect the pots in the joystick to the inputs inside the 9x. If the pot values are different, just match the pots in the stick to the 9x.

Basically build the guts of the 9x into a "docking station" for the joystick. Could even build in a screen on the docking station.

Hi Theo
Here's two threads which should help with this.

RC-USB Joystick Files

USB 2 PPM converter

Something I've been wanting to do for a while now, is use a WII controller to fly with. This should be fun especially with a quad. You can buy a ready-made long range UHF WII controller already:

Hi Johan
I've used a Wii nunchuck before to control a articilated arm.
I read the accelerometer values from the nunchack into a PIC micro and then manipulated the arm accoringly
I'm sure one could make a plan... :D

Another JR 9X pcm user, that has to be the best radio ever made, PCM is by far the best radio for fpv, i use one for photographing transmission lines on a gas heli, PcM ISNT line of sight like like newer systems, less prone to masking and the range is a lot further, unfortunately they drain the battery fast. Never sell that radio.
