International Shipping - Is it reliable?

Postby Stringweasel » Thu May 28, 2015 1:26 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking to order some relatively expensive parts from overseas. Specifically from banggood.com. I want to buy a EMAX Nighthawk 250 kit, which cost almost about R2000.

I hear that South Africa's customs are quite irritating at times, and that not all packages come through. Is it reliable to order from an international store, or is it better to pay a bit more and buy it locally? If it's available.

I know this is an old post, but hopefully someone can find it helpful.
First off, local is always going to be better.

But, about Chinese shopping sites :
I buy a lot at banggood.com and aliexpress.com, all low value items.

All shipped via cheapest method.

I wanted a phone recently and considered the risk. R4500 value.
I decided I could not do that and in any event found it at Takealot, so they eat the risk. :)
But, I did just buy a R1300 drone from aliexpress.com, and I fully expect it to arrive.

The post office has only lost 1 of my parcels (value R10) to date.
During festive season its taking close to 3 months to arrive.

The theft situation in my opinion is greatly reduced at the post office nowadays, according to my experience.

There is this other mail service called EMS, which from what I have been able to deduce, is a faster and more secure method.

Local post office said to me it goes through a different channel to achieve the speed and security. (Still, I was dubious, as itchy South African hands will still touch my prescious cargo)
Still cheaper than courier though, just better.

Also a late responder here.

I order cheap ($20-30) packages from aliexpress and banggood for my MJX all the time, they arrived, albeit moer late.
Contemplating doing a expensive purchase too (pending another thread response).

As for post office, yes, much better nowadays.

However, there was this little speakers order that didn't make it :/
Box was cut open, speakers removed, and bricks put inside and nicely foampacked (because bricks tend to damage)....
Boxes were resealed.

On the upside the sender did re-send and took the loss on themselves

I have a few thousand Rands worth of quad stuff somewhere in the system.
Last scan was 21st Jan at Customs.
Keep getting told there was a huge backlog in January which is now starting to move.
To say I'm nervous is an understatement.

Yes, I also have quad stuff stuck in Jnb mail centre. It eventually starts moving. I have previously ordered 15 items or so, with only 1 no-show, but it only has a 2 usd value, so no skin off my nose there. My concern is that the local post office now call me by name and know I get a lot of stuff, so curiosity could be an issue in the future.

My stuff finally got out of customs after 31 days of not moving.
I've never lost a package (touch wood), but I get really nervous when tracking stops for any length of time.

Great viceroy. Good news indeed. I have a few untracked items as well on order that should have arrived by now. Nail biting for sure. It amazes me how items sent later from same country arrive before the items that were sent first. They all have to pass through SAPO system.
